THE LOOK
This is a clean bar. Squeaky clean. The floors were scrubbed, the bar was immaculate. Even the glasses were without water marks. And with modern art on the walls, colorful hanging pendant lamps in warm colors, and several flat screen TVs, the bar also felt cozy and inviting. On the second floor is a VIP lounge patrons can get into by receiving promotional cards from the bar staff - randomly passed out around town during the week - or by dishing out cash for bottle service (bottles of vodka run between $150 and $170). The lounge was swanky, with black rolling chairs, soft blue lighting, lava lamps and black leather couches that changed the vibe from comfortable to sexy.

THE CROWD
I stopped in on a Wednesday, so the place wasn't hopping with people. However, those who were in for a drink were coupled up, dressed business casual and seemed to know the bartender, Rob, well. Weeknights attract regulars who enjoy the staff as much as the atmosphere, but according to Rob, Pelican on the weekends is a ball of energy, with well-dressed 20somethings looking to spend a little extra cash for a particuarly special night upstairs in VIP.
THE TWO DRINKS
Rob immediately served me up a "Pelican shot," a fruity but strong concoction made with a variety of Schnapps, Hpnotiq and Bacardi 151 for $4.50. Feeling creative, he then crafted a brand new martini for me, which he dubbed the "Effen Martini," made with Effen Black Cherry vodka and cranberry juice, and garnished with a pretty lemon slice. Light on the fruity side and heavy on the strong, this $4.50 martini emulated the bar's vibe: simple, sleek and stylish.
THE GRUB
The Pelican Bar hopes to roll out a menu within the next couple of weeks, which will be Italian-inspired and feature appetizers, pizzas, sandwiches, pasta and a quick lunch menu.
THE VERDICT
With a special invitation or a plan to share a $150 bottle of top-shelf liquor with friends, you can enjoy a unique, exclusive night in the VIP Lounge upstairs. Otherwise, a smile and valid ID will get you into the main-floor bar, which is almost as fabulous, and much more affordable. - Jessica Knight
