Wash away your post-Iowa caucus hangover with High Life Lounge's 12th annual Groundhog Day grand opening celebration on Feb. 2.
The downtown Des Moines bar and restaurant opened its doors on Groundhog Day more than a decade ago and plans to continue its annual celebration at 6 a.m. Tuesday morning. Free Miller High Life will be offered from 6-8 a.m. while supplies last.
Breakfast will be served and the 1993 film "Groundhog Day" will be playing on repeat throughout the event's duration, from 6-11 a.m.
"Polk County Paula," the event's designated groundhog, is scheduled to appear at 7:15 a.m. Mike Brewington, president of Iowa Beverage Systems, has been designated "mayor" of the Tuesday morning festivities. Brewington will select and crown a Groundhog Day queen from one of the members of the crowd at 7 a.m.
The festivities also include a parade of beer trucks, which is slated to take place preceding the appearance of Paula, on the streets surrounding High Life Lounge.
The event is expected to take place in spite of snow in the Tuesday morning forecast.
