Bottoms up, craft beer lovers. Des Moines Craft Beer week kicked off Friday, so it’s time to dive into all things Iowa brew.
With the goal of “celebrating the Des Moines area’s growing craft beer scene,” Des Moines Craft Beer Week is tapped to host a number of beer-related events across the metro, ranging from a golf outing to fun runs to a meet-and-greet with local brewers.
Here’s a look at what to expect at Des Moines Beer Week — and a number of other craft beer events — across Iowa this summer.
Des Moines Beer Week (June 16-25)
One of the marquee annual Iowa beer events, this year’s Des Moines Beer Week plans to offer 36 events across the metro. These include:
- June 19: Join women of the Iowa craft beer industry for an event coined “Tapping the glass ceiling,” where plans include unveiling “Unite: Nasty Woman Strong Ale.” The event aims to raise awareness for the Iowa Pink Boots Society, a group formed to assist and educate female beer professionals. Kicking off at 5:30 p.m., the event is free and takes place at Peace Tree’s Des Moines Branch in the East Village.
- June 21: Dust off your Nintendo 64 skills and head to Up-Down in Des Moines’ East Village for Exile Brewing Co.’s Mario Kart tournament. Registration is free and the tournament kicks off at 8 p.m.
- June 21: Become a beer tasting master by taking part in the the beer sensory workshop at the Iowa Taproom in Des Moines’ East Village. Tickets cost $30 and the event is limited to 40 participants.
- June 22: Hop into your strangest, most head-turning drinkin’ pants and head to Wooly’s in Des Moines’ East Village for the Drinking Pants Pageant. Participants will strut across the catwalk in three categories: men, women and groups. A performance from Des Moines’ own Karen Meat kicks the night off at 6:30 p.m.. $5 at the door.
Part of Des Moines Beer Week tradition, collaboration beers have been crafted by a number of the area’s 16 breweries. The 2017 collaboration theme is single-hop, single-malt beers, focusing on one grain and one hop style in each recipe.
Collaboration beers include the “John Lemon” tart pale ale from Exile and Denver’s Station 26 Brewing; the “Influence” pale ale from Confluence Brewing Co. and Minneapolis’ Insight Brewing; the “South Park”-inspired “Promise Rings” from Flix Brewhouse and Keg Creek Brewing; the slightly fruity “de Vine Mistress” from Ankeny’s Mistress Brewing and West Des Moines’ Twisted Vine Brewing Co; and Court Avenue Brewing Company’s “Barley’s Angels,” a beer benefiting local nonprofit Girls Rock! Des Moines.
Information on all Des Moines Beer Week events, including all 10 collaboration brews as well as ticket and event registration, can be found at dsmbeerweek.beer.
