Iowa Brewing Company and brewmaster Mike Wing wants to make craft beer accessible to more Iowans by brewing beer that everyone can enjoy.
A number of Iowa breweries plan to pour a cold one for a good cause next week as part of “Brews for Texas,” a fundraising effort in the aftermath of Hurricane Harvey.
Organized by Court Avenue Brewing Company head brewer Brian Vaughan and curated with assistance from the Iowa Brewers Guild and Iowa Craft Beer Tent, “Brews for Texas” is set to take place from noon to midnight on Sept. 14 at the Court Avenue Brewing Company, 309 Court Ave.
Eleven beers, all brewed in Iowa, will be served at $5 a pour during the event, which Vaughan said he hopes will raise about $2,500 for hurricane relief.
Fundraising from the event will be donated to the Greater Houston Community Foundation’s Hurricane Harvey Relief Fund, Vaughan said. With an initial, estimated damage price tag of $160 billion, Harvey is considered one of the worst and costliest natural disasters in American history.
“I wanted to give something personally but felt like anything I could offer as an individual was pretty paltry in comparison to what the need was,” he said. “If we all just pitch in a little bit … we could leverage the economic resources of the craft beer community to really give [back].”
Breweries involved include SingleSpeed Brewing Co., Lake Time Brewing Co., Barn Town Brewing, Fox Brewing, Flix Brewhouse, NoCoast Beer, Firetrucker Brewing Co., Iowa Brewing Co., Lark Brewing and Reclaimed Rails. The event is limited to 10 taps — plus one cask-conditioned beer from Iowa Brewing Co. Vaughan said he received responses from 10 interested breweries within two hours of proposing the idea.
The event plans to include a raffle with giveaways including passes to local beer clubs, merchandise from the Iowa Craft Beer Tent and brewery growlers.
“It turns out that I wasn’t the only brewer looking to help,” Vaughan said in a news release.
In addition to the event, breweries across the state plan to donate a portion of profits on Sept. 14 to Hurricane Harvey relief, a news release said. More information can be found at Facebook.com/CourtAveBrew.
