Pets With Human Names perform at 8 p.m. Saturday at Gas Lamp, 1501 Grand Ave.
Alex Nickeson and Andrew Pierson met as roommates in college, playing music for fun. After school was out they met Benton Schoenrock, who suggested they form a band.
The problem: Nickeson played guitar and Pierson played bass. They needed a drummer, and Schoenrock didn't drum.
"He kept saying 'Man, it would be awesome to start a band,'" Pierson said. "Eventually he decided to buy a drum set. We got a storage unit in West Des Moines and started banging away."
The band quickly produced an EP to give bookers to capture PWHN's sound, but in 2014 Pets With Human Names released its debut full length album with CD and vinyl versions available.
Around the time of the ablum's release PWHN embarked on a tour, hitting St. Louis, Chicago, Nashville and other cities.
Pets With Human Names has shows scheduled throughout the summer and is planning a smaller tour in the fall. The band hopes to hit the road for another big tour later in the year.
"We were expecting to lose money on our first tour, but we ended up doing pretty well," Pierson said. "We got a good reception everywhere we went. If we can get the time off we would love to tour more."
