Now, it's up to a secret panel of judges to travel around the state tasting burgers from each restaurant to determine which is Iowa's best.
"We want them to have a unique eating experience," said Brooke German, director of marketing for the Iowa Beef Industry Council. "And if the restaurants knew that a judge was coming, they might go a little above and beyond and it might not be the same eating experience that any other average customer would have at any given day at the restaurant, so we keep it a secret."
The winner will be announced on May 1 to kick off National Beef Month.
For a burger to qualify, it has to be made of 100 percent beef. Other ingredients such as spices and vegetables can be added, but it has to be an all-beef patty — or patties — served on a bun or other bread product. Condiments are allowed and the burger has to be cooked to a temperature of 160 degrees.
The BeerBurger, Doc’s Stadium Bar & Grill, Smokin’ Hereforde and The Irish Shanti are all first-time top 10 finalists.
This is the eighth year of the contest. Last year, The Chuckwagon Restaurantin Adair won for its Angus burgers on toasted buns.
"This contest is two-fold," said German. "We celebrate Iowa beef producers for all of their work they do in producing a safe and wholesome product, and then the restaurants for serving their product in delicious and creative ways for their customers." And Iowa is fourth in the country for beef production.
It looks like it's time to get on the road and taste our way around Iowa's Top 10 burger joints.
