Cheese plates and couscous aren’t found on menus in Indianola often, but one hot spot about 20 miles south of Des Moines is changing all of that.

Mishmash Eats & Sweets, a chef-owned restaurant opened by Indianola native Katie Ohnemus, offers up some spectacular lunch deals six days a week.

The restaurant started out as a bakery, but the chef began offering breakfast and lunchtime deals when the business renovated and moved into the old Warren Hotel in the heart of Warren County.

It’s easy to tell Ohnemus’ love for baking with menu items such as quiche flavors that change daily and flatbreads like the recently featured blueberry basil and goat cheese.

Delicious biscuit sandwiches, which vary with a menu that changes regularly, sometimes include chicken apple almond salad to beef and horseradish with cheddar cheese.

During a trip last week, the turkey apple cheddar biscuit sandwich, a menu staple, didn’t disappoint.

The sandwich has a pile of turkey with apple slices, Dijon, a garlic spread and cheddar cheese. The flaky, buttery biscuits are always the best part.

A corn medley salad didn’t disappoint as a side, either. The savory salad had corn, basil and a creamy goat cheese dressing.

It was a cheese plate that truly stole the show last week, though.

With four different kinds of cheeses, almonds, a toasted biscuit and a leafy salad with a balsamic couscous, it was a perfect lunch. Kalamata olives and the balsamic dressing on the couscous proved to be a superb pairing with the cheese.

Most lunch and breakfast menu items are offered for less than $10.

The delicious food comes with a very relaxed atmosphere. Patrons order their food at the bar and serve themselves water at a nearby drink station.

Customers can also order one of several craft beers, or some Gong Fu tea brought down from Des Moines.

And don't forget about the sweets. MishMash serves everything from brownies and cookies to scones.

There’s plenty of opportunities to get to Mishmash, since it’s staying open until 9 p.m. on Thursdays all summer. Mishmash is also open from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturdays.

You might have to wait to make the trip to Indianola, though, because the restaurant will be closed from June 14-21.
