A new taproom and gastropub from the owners of WineStyles is coming to the West Glen shopping center in West Des Moines. Wochit
BeerStyles is the new project in the West Glen shopping district brought to you by the owners of the franchise Winestyles. BeerStyles is just located down the street from Winestyles.
The restaurant is so new, in fact, that the building is still under construction. Both indoor and patio seating are available, but you’ll pass through a construction zone in between the two. The taproom has a modern industrial look with white subway tiles and clean colors.
As the name suggests, there is a nice selection of beers on tap along with some unique ciders I hadn't tried before. I tried a Wilson’s Orchard cherry crush cider ($6) out of Iowa City and my friend Natalie had a Mikkeller Drink'in Berliner passion fruit beer ($9).
The drink menu is organized by taste, which is helpful when trying to find a new beer for your palate. The categories of draft beers include Crisp & Clean, Sour, Tart & Funky, Fruity & Spicy,
BeerStyles also serves food, and their menu is vast for a taproom. The sections include Bites & Apps, Salads, Poutine, Raw Bar (seafood), Sandwiches, Tablebreads & Flatbreads and Mains.
The “Bites & Apps” menu ranges from crab cakes to deviled eggs. My table started with the warm artichoke and mushroom dip ($7) along with the roasted beet salad that's served with a goat cheese phyllo pastry ($8).
The poutine portion of the menu is diverse. It includes cheeseburger poutine with pickles; spicy chorizo poutine; and pork, fennel & onion poutine, among other options. A friend ordered the cheesy lobster poutine ($12) while I ordered the beef brisket poutine ($9).
There isn't a children's menu yet, but there are kid-friendly options on the menu — both Natalie and my friend Beth's son dug into the beef sliders ($12) and enjoyed them. The flatbreads can be ordered for an individual, or you can order a 5-foot-long one for the table. I ordered the personal-sized Dolce e Sale flatbread ($13) that comes with béchamel sauce, prosciutto, Gorgonzola and figs.
The owners are still in the process of achieving their final goal of operating different three dining concepts under one roof which, along with BeerStyles, will include a Latin- and Mediterranean-inspired al fresco patio called La Veranda and an upscale fine dining restaurant, Salt of the Hearth. In the meantime, BeerStyles offers a new option for beer drinkers in the West Glen area.
