Bull Black Nova performs at 9 p.m. Friday in the Des Moines Social Club's Basement, 900 Mulberry St.
Bull Black Nova singer-guitarist A.J. Worden and drummer Peter Kokontis first bonded over their similar musical interests while attending college in Dubuque. After Freshman year they relocated to Iowa City to attend the University of Iowa and drafted in Peter's brother, Adam, to play bass, forming Bull Black Nova.
After a few years of practice, Bull Black Nova started playing its first shows last year, as well as releasing its debut album last June.
Bull Black Nova is heavily influenced by 70's/80's Manchester bands like The Smiths, New Jorder and Joy Division, as well as newer bands like Deerhunter, Radiohead and Depeche Mode.
In April Bull Black Nova opened for Amen Dunes at the Mission Creek Festival in Iowa City. The trio is currently recordeding a second album with Luke Tweedy at Flat Black Studios in Iowa City and plan to release it in the fall or winter.
