Bad news for hip-hop fans in Des Moines: rapper and food connoisseur Action Bronson has canceled his 80/35 Music Festival main stage appearance, organizers confirm via news release.

The New York performer was scheduled as main support for Saturday festival headliner The Shins. Des Moines’ own soulful rock ‘n’ roll outfit The Maytags will replace Bronson on the main stage Saturday evening.

“We were informed by Action Bronson’s management team that he won’t be able to make it to Des Moines for tonight’s show, due to what we understand are circumstances beyond his control,” the 80/35 news release said.

The Maytags will perform at 5 p.m., with funk group The Motet moving its previously scheduled 5 p.m. set to the 7 p.m. slot, previously occupied by Bronson.

He posted a brief statement on Twitter Saturday afternoon, apologizing to fans for the cancellation: "Sorry Des Moines I'm not gonna be able to make it to you today. But make sure you enjoy the rest of the festival and be safe."

Tickets to 80/35, $50 at the door, are non-refundable, but the news release encourages concerned concert-goers to share concerns at inquiry@desmoinesmc.com. This marks the second time in the festival’s 10-year history that an act failed to make a main stage set; the first coming when Flavor Flav dropped from a performance with Public Enemy

Music is scheduled to resume at noon on Saturday.

“We’re extremely excited to add Maytags to the bill,” Rossi said. “They’ve been doing unbelievable things in the metro area.”

Indie pop act MGMT headlined the first day of 80/35, which organizer said brought an estimated 7,500 paid and 15,000 total attendees to downtown Des Moines. Between free and ticketed stages, the Des Moines Music Coalition-curated festival pulls an estimated 30,000 people annually.
