The last time Rob Zombie axe-slinger John 5 (real name John William Lowery) paid a visit to this “quaint” little venue was in 2015.
It was a sold-out show with the place packed wall-to-wall with people.
“I remember it was blazing, blazing, blazing, blazing hot in there” John 5 said. “I don’t remember a lot of shows, but I do remember that show.”
John 5 and The Creatures (featuring new bassist Ian Ross and drummer Logan Miles Nix) will be playing the Vaudeville Mews once again Tuesday, Feb. 20, for another sure-to-be blistering show.
Basically, this tour is to show off his latest live album, “It’s Alive!” (released Jan. 25), which features numerous live renditions of cuts from his most recent solo album, “Season of the Witch.”
“The live album came about by accident,” John 5 said. “When we were setting up in Sellersville, Pa., and a guy asked if we wanted to record the show. We had one shot. So, I said (to the band), ‘Let’s not move around and just concentrate on each other.’ I had to explain to the crowd why we weren’t jumping around or looking at the crowd. Luckily, we were well rehearsed.”
Not only does the band play perfectly on the record, there were no overdubs or touch-ups in the studio.
“I wish there was overdubs,” John 5 said. “I would love to have the crowd a little louder, but we just didn’t have the ability to do that. I don’t even think there were crowd mics. It’s a real, live record and I’m super proud of it.”
Although John 5’s day job with Rob Zombie is on a tour break, they have been working hard on a new record. John 5 promises that it’s the best one Zombie’s ever made, and he has his fingers crossed that it will be released soon.
“If Rob is taking a break from touring, it gives me a chance to go and do my shows,” John 5 said. “And it’s a perfect fit because he’s supportive of it. So, when we have some time off, I get to go and do some pickin.’”
John 5’s show at Vaudeville Mews is sponsored by Metro Concerts Live with local acts Hallowed Hysteria and Alter Within as openers.
