Good morning, Iowa!
Happy Tuesday! There is good news for music fans in the city. Henry Rollins (Nov. 18) and Elvis Costello (Oct. 6) have both announced shows at Hoyt Sherman Place this fall. Woo hoo! This perfume apparently smells like Okoboji. If you need a place to go eat lunch, go to L'italiano. I ate some great dishes while I was there. Speaking of food, La Mie is opening a skywalk location downtown and another Chick-fil-A is coming to Des Moines. Enough about food and Okoboji, here's what we're talking about around the city…
There was an uproar across the country when Brock Turner, the Stanford University swimmer who sexually assaulted an unconscious woman, ended up only getting a six-month prison sentence. Among those who were outraged was an Iowa witch and her local coven. The coven had planned the hexing for just their 13 members, but the event went viral after been posted on Facebook. “We use Facebook events as a calendar basically,” said Melanie Elizabeth Hexen, one of the coven’s witches. “We put it up there so we all knew the date and the time and so people in the coven who can't join in person, could join online.” Turner was hexed so "that he may be impotent, know the pain of pine needles, have nightmares and that food may bring him no sustenance," according to Hexen.
Coming this August, you can find Global Brew Tap House in West Des Moines. It'll have 50 beers on tap and another 200 in bottles. You can find it at 9500 University Ave., Suite 1118, next to the new Wasabi restaurant. Hours will be 3 p.m. to midnight Monday through Thursday; 1 p.m. to 2 a.m. Friday; 11 a.m. to 2 a.m. Saturday; and 11 a.m. to midnight Sunday.
It's getting hot around Des Moines. Real hot. Go to one of these places to cool off.
BEER WEEK? HECK YES!
Now that Winefest is behind us, we're gearing up for the full 10 days of events from Friday to June 26 that's known as Des Moines Beer Week 2016. The week kicks of at el Bait Shop (200 S.W. Second St.) this Friday from 4 to 8 p.m. when brewers from all over Des Moines reveal their High Tide Australian Ale, a collaboration from 14 brewers that started in April and percolated in one of the 30-barrel tanks at Exile Brewing.
