So my colleaugue Matt Leimkuehler has been a bad Iowan. Until a few days ago, he had never tried ice cream from Snookies Malt Shop. I have a confession, too. I also hadn't tried Snookies until a few weeks ago. Nostalgia and long-standing tradition aside, we both now understand why the quaint, casual and oh-so-Iowan atmosphere of Snookies is loved among so many. Maybe we'll see you on Beaver Ave. soon.
Live music is alive and well in Ames with this year's Maximum Ames Music Festival bringing in over 100 acts. It takes place Sept. 15-18. You can buy passes to the festival at Midwestix.com. Seattle-based group Lavender Country and DJ Yella of NWA fame will be there. You can find Baby Dee, Kansas City-based blues artist Danielle Nicole, Des Moines' own The Maytags, Simon Joyner, Dressy Bessy and more on the lineup here.
We've been to a million fireworks shows, but nothing beats a night under the stars with close friends and family as you celebrate Independence Day. There are a number of places to celebrate the Fourth of July across central Iowa. After you're done firing up the grill and gather your family and friends at one of these area fireworks shows.
July is such a great time to be in Des Moines. From the 80/35 Music Festival that’s happening next week to the Italian American Festival of Iowa, there will be something for everybody to enjoy this month.
