Good morning, Iowa!

Unless you've been living underneath a rock, then you know that the Iowa State Fair is upon us. The fair can be a fun place for some, others not so much. Meet Daniel Finney, who has a whole 25 reasons why he hates the fair. Bah humbug. In other news, Firehouse Subs just opened up its fourth Des Moines metro location over in Clive and Frontier Airlines announced that it plans to launch a three-times-a-week flight between Des Moines and the Orlando International Airport starting Oct. 30. Let's talk about what else is happening around Des Moines...

TASTY TEX-MEX

Have you been getting ready to inhale ________ on a stick, dozens of mini doughnuts and funnel cakes? Well, if you're looking for an escape from the crowds and the traffic, there's a restaurant just down the road with views that far exceed those from the front of the butter cow line. From blue ribbon-ready to save-your-money-for-margaritas, see what the Register's Datebook Diner recommends from La Feria's menu. (Spoiler: Get the grilled shrimp taco and pollo La Feria.)

DOWNTOWN HOUSING BOOM

More than 2,300 apartments are scheduled to open around downtown Des Moines before the end of summer 2017. It's an unprecedented wave of new apartments that provides a major test of the city's rental market. Here are five things you should know about the downtown apartment boom, including rental rates and location.

ZOMBIE BURGER + IOWA STATE FAIR = THIS

Every year around this time, Zombie Burger never fails us. Known for its odd burger and milkshake concoctions, the burger joint puts together a special menu for the Iowa State Fair. Usually ZB prepares a full menu of items for each day of the State Fair, but this year we're only getting two. They're available from Thursday through the last day of the fair, Aug. 21. Here they are!

GET FRESH...

Calling itself “Iowa’s first hip-hop festival,” Fresh Fest Music Festival features two stages of music for two days, including both local and regional artists, curated by Media Fresh Records. Celebrate the hip-hop lifestyle with freestyle and b-boy battles, an urban fashion show and more. Des Moines Social Club, 900 Mulberry St. $20 single-day pass, $25 two-day pass.
