3 salted caramel desserts to try in Des Moines
Salted caramel has become a mainstream flavor in the dessert world — and with good reason! The decadent combo of salty and sweet is a match made in taste bud heaven. After drooling my way through the Des Moines area, I discovered the top three salted caramel treats you HAVE TO try this fall.
Salted Caramel Crunch Ice Cream by Black Cat Ice Cream
This Salted Caramel Crunch Ice Cream is an explosion of flavor in just one bite. The super saltiness is perfectly balanced with rich ice cream, sweet caramel and crunchy cracker cookies that have been soaked in a sugar-butter mix, baked and then topped with dark chocolate — yum! Find this delicious creation at the Beaverdale Fall Festival, for sale at Capes Kafe in the Des Moines Social Club or grab a free cup at the Beast Village Comedy Festival in Des Moines, October 1st-4th. I promise, this ice cream will make you forget that other flavors exist. Go to blackcaticecream.com.
Salted Caramel Apple Pie by Sweet to Eat Bakery & Cake Shop
After eight years baking out of their homes, owners Rachael Owens and Michelle Lindell started Sweet to Eat Bakery & Cake Shop in December 2014 and I’m sure glad they did. After one bite of their Salted Caramel Apple Pie, my holiday pie orders were placed. The crust is the best you’ll ever taste — the perfect combo of tender and flaky. The middle is a mouthwatering mix of crisp apple slices, salt and warm, gooey caramel. I’ll definitely be stopping back in to try their daily baked goods including breads, pies, cinnamon rolls, scones, bars and cookies. Go to sweettoeatllc.com or visit their shop at 303 SW School St. in Ankeny.

Salty Cinnamon Caramel Cupcake by Creme Cupcake
Cupcakes can sometimes be a little too ordinary for my taste but Creme Cupcake creates cupcakes that are out of this world AHH-MAZING. (No wonder why they were on Food Network's Cupcake Wars.) This vanilla cake cupcake is as moist and delicious as it gets. It’s filled with a melt-in-your-mouth salted caramel concoction and topped with cinnamon cream cheese buttercream, caramel and sea salt. It’s like a gooey cinnamon roll but in cupcake form. I may have gotten one to go, too—don’t judge me! If you’re in need of a date idea or girl’s night, head over to their dessert lounge for a sweet treat and exotic cocktail. Go to cremecupcake.com or visit their shop at 543 28th St. in Des Moines.
