Meet the geniuses behind Market Day

Meet Cat

Producer and Logistics

For the last ten years, Cat Rocketship has been making art and organizing events in Central Iowa. Cat helped found Market Day in 2009, with studio mates Kari Bienart (Cheese Shop) and Keri Thein. The trio’s goal was to bring attention to the young makers of Iowa who were traveling to other cities to hock their wares, and who were virtually unknown in their own hometowns. Since then, Cat has helped produce more than 40 craft shows.

She keeps busy with a variety of projects. In addition to working on Market Day, Cat produces other events for artists, like critique nights and classes. She also conducts art workshops for K-12 classes, is a substitute teacher with Southeast Polk schools and participates in the Portrait Studio collective.

On Black Friday, Cat will be selling drawings and painting portraits live at her booth.

Meet Dani

Director and Vendor Coordinator

When Market Day started in 2009, Dani Ausen participated as the event's graphic designer. As she watched the show develop, she was intrigued by maker culture and small business entrepreneurship and decided to try her hand with a brand new handmade accessories business. Seven years later, Dani is the director and vendor coordinator for Market Day. Her business, daniAWESOME, is thriving, with a presence online, plus stores in four states and growing every day.

Dani isn't a fan of free time or sleep. In addition to directing Market Day and running her business, she is a graphic designer at Iowa State University, works as a freelance designer and photographer and participates with Portrait Studio. She has loved getting her hands into the Des Moines arts scene, and has no intention of stopping.

Dani will be representing daniAWESOME at Market Day, and is excited to bring brand new products to the market, as well as her long running lines of jewelry, accessories and Christmas wares.
