In Des Moines, the warmer temperatures of April, May and June herald the opening of Snookie's and other wonderful, local ice cream establishments that delight the taste buds with creamy goodness.

Hundreds, if not thousands, of Iowans add a visit to one or more of these spots to their summer bucket lists.

There are plenty of good ice cream treats available all over Iowa, from the Sweet Spot in Denver to Ames-famous Hickory Park's extensive ice cream menu to the Sweet Treats Ice Cream Co. in Jewell. Each offers wonderful options and opportunities to make warm-weather memories.

I am also a fan of Snookie's. But my frozen dairy dessert loyalties belong elsewhere. My summer bucket list of must-see-must-eat-must-experience pleasures of Iowana will include a trip to northeast Iowa for the Cool Cookie of Wartburg College in Waverly.

This sandwich treat is a giant. One cookie features two hefty chocolate chip cookies that barely contain the creamy soft-serve ice cream in the middle. You're looking at a good 1.5- to 2-inch height on that. And these cookies are not just cool, but downright cold at first. Pure frozen bliss.

The cookies would be a good dessert on their own. They are thick, chewy yet crispy, and full of bits of semisweet chocolate. But they are much better paired with the ice cream.

Cool Cookies have been around for at least 25 years. In the 1990s, they came in one flavor — classic vanilla. Now, the cookies cost a mere $1.49 apiece and come with different fillings: classic vanilla, but also rich chocolate and refreshing mint chocolate chip.

During my four years on Wartburg's campus, I discovered and devoured hundreds of Cool Cookies.

Since then, I've returned to campus numerous times and swung by the Den Ritersaal to enjoy a Cool Cookie. Two years ago, I introduced my son, then 3, to his first. It was not my best parenting choice to permit him to eat the entire treat. But it was worthwhile to see him marvel at the dessert and enjoy it as much as I do.

Here's one upshot of the Cool Cookie: It's available year-round. And its name is alliterative. Delightful to taste and say.
