Best of Beaverdale bars
It's Drake Relays season in Des Moines and that means one thing: a perfect excuse to party. Here are four bars in Beaverdale to check out if you want to escape the Relays rush, but don't want to stray too far from Drake.
Saints Pub and Patio
Saints is the essential sports bar and restaurant in Beaverdale. Armed with an ideal drinking patio and a slew of drink selections, it's the perfect place to post up for a beautiful evening of outdoor drinking. If you're the type who isn't wanting to sit outside, settle in at the bar located in the center of the room — which is decorated with an array of televisions carrying in every sporting event imaginable — and sip on an affordable beer or mixed drink special.
Find it: 4041 Urbandale Ave.
Hours: 11-2 a.m. Monday-Friday, 9-2 a.m. Saturday and Sunday
Across the street from Saints is the colorful neighborhood pub Beaver Tap. More of a "traditional" bar, less chic than Saints, Beaver Tap is simply the block's closest offering to a dive. It's the type of place you want to spend your night if you're looking to put back beer after beer. Definitely the go-to bar if you're looking for a rowdy night out.
Find it: 4050 Urbandale Ave.
Hours: 3 p.m. – 2 a.m. Monday through Friday, 11 a.m. – 2 a.m Saturday through Sunday
If we're calling Saints the block's sports bar and Beaver Tap the dive, then GoodSons falls into this weird middle ground where it's not quite either. It's more of a laid-back hangout. There's plenty of tables lining the L-shaped bar, including an outdoor patio — so comfort isn't an issue. GoodSons is the place you'd take a friend who's never been to Des Moines to show him or her there's a little bit more to the city than bars serving up Bud Lights to 30-something men trying to re-live college days.
Find it: 2815 Beaver Ave.
Hours: 3 p.m.-2 a.m. Monday, 11-2 a.m. Tuesday-Sunday
Tally's is the most upscale offering of the four bars. With roughly 10 dollar plates and a classy, laid-out dining room — this is the best option for a date. With a stellar breakfast, lunch and dinner menu, any time of the day is ideal for trying Tally's. Be sure to try the BBQ pulled pork sandwich at lunch, with a hoppy beer to drink. Just wanting to stop by with friends? That works, too. Tally's has a rooftop patio built for sun-filled day drinking.
Find it: 2712 Beaver Ave.
Hours: 11 a.m.-10 p.m. Monday-Thursday, 11 a.m.-11 p.m. Friday and Saturday, 9 a.m.-2 p.m. Sunday
