One of the greatest things about Des Moines is the wide range of live music we have. If you try to follow the scene, you'll find there's a show every night of the week where you can listen to the live music without having to pay — now, of course, be kind. Spare a few bucks to the struggling musicians you watch perform. Here are five places to check out.
The Continental
If you're all about that jazz, check out the Continental on Saturdays from 9 p.m. to midnight. From smooth jazz to romantic notes of love, the music here is perfect for swaying to. You'll also have foodies and killer cocktails. These bartenders know what they're doing. Order a specialty cocktail, and you'll understand what I'm saying.
Find it: 428 E. Locust St.

The Lift
Get a double dose of jazz by hitting up The Lift on Tuesdays from 9 p.m. to midnight. Grab a local beer, or order their Tuesday special: PB & J. No, not the sandwich. A PBR + a Jameson shot. Kick back and let the jazz fun begin.
Find it: 222 Fourth St.

They offer live music on Thursdays, Fridays, Saturdays and every other Wednesday from 9 p.m. to midnight. Not only do they offer funk and Reggae, but also soul, R&B and acoustic sets, too.

The Coda Lounge
Renaissance Savery Hotel's The Coda Lounge has a thing they call Life Live - music on Tuesdays (6 to 9 p.m.) and Fridays (8 to 11 p.m.). Although, for the month of July, they will only be offering entertainment on Friday nights. Everything from jazz to acoustic to folk is what you will find here. They offer beers, cocktails and over 20 wines. Side note: they also have good eats from classic appetizers like baked spinach and corn dip to cracker-thin-crust pizzas.

Bogg's Hull Avenue Tavern
Let's take a minute to get out of downtown, and go to the East-side to listen to da-live-musics. Hull Avenue Tavern has opened their stage for singer/songwriters on Wednesdays from 7 to 11 p.m. Each week features a few musicians showing their work. Play some pool. Sip on some beer. Listen to the music. It's a great break to the middle of the week.
Find it: 834 Hull Ave.
