Ingersoll Avenue has been the home of some of Des Moines’ most beloved restaurants — Noah’s and Jesse’s Embers, just to name two — for decades.

Over the years, a number of new dining options have opened up along this widely traveled road. If you want the feel of an old-school supper club, soda fountain, or modern and stylish ambience, you can find it on Ingersoll.

Bauder's

3802 Ingersoll

Grab a seat at the counter and take a step into the past. Try the egg salad sandwich, tuna melt or the Roosevelt Special (turkey with Swiss and mustard grilled on a hoagie bun). Order a shake, sundae or flavored soda to go with your meal. In the summer you can order homemade peach or strawberry ice cream.

Big Tomato Pizza

2613 Ingersoll

Their window claims “lousy service” but that doesn’t deter customers from coming in for a slice or a whole pie. They have 41 toppings and specialty pizzas like the chili dog, lemon pepper chicken or potato and onion ring. Big Tomato is open until 3 a.m. and they offer free delivery to most of Des Moines.

Creme Cupcake

543 28th Street

At Des Moines’ first dessert lounge, try the pairing menu to find the perfect dessert and drink combination. Try the dessert of the month, the banana bread pudding, or peanut butter lava cake. If you can’t decide between the desserts get the sampler and a Manhattan. The lounge is open in the evenings, but during the day you can stop in for a cupcake and coffee.

Mediterranean-inspired dishes, wood-fired pizzas, and craft beer are all offered at Eatery A. A variety of appetizers include fried gnocchi, beef kibbeh, and dirty rice arancini. Pastas, steaks and even octopus are entree options. Go for happy hour (every day from 3 p.m.-6 p.m.) and get half off pizza, wine and draft beer.

El Patio

611 37th Street

Open all year long, El Patio serves up southwest style Mexican food. During the warmer months, take advantage of the patio at the back of the restaurant while you enjoy a margarita. A few of the menu items include blue corn enchiladas, a black bean flauta, and the kahuna burrito (pork, cheese, lettuce, smothered in a green chili sauce and cheese).

Hagar’s Manhattan Deli

3705 Ingersoll

Open for lunch, get there early or expect to wait in line (don’t worry, it moves quickly). Order the daily special or off the extensive sandwich menu. The Tuesday special is so popular you can order it any day of the week. They also offer sides, a variety of homemade soups and a few dessert bars each day.

Jesse’s Embers

3301 Ingersoll

Open since 1963, Jesse’s Embers is known for steak and seafood. Diners can watch as their food is cooked on the open flame grill. Open for lunch and dinner, order the Emberburger (1/2 pound sirloin beef patty), the open pit French dip, filet mignon or the beer battered lobster tails.

During the day, get your fill of ramen, banh mi sandwiches, noodle and rice dishes and a variety of tots. On Friday and Saturday nights at 10 p.m., Krunkwich turns into Los Banditos Hot Dog Speakeasy and is open until 3 a.m. Expect eclectic hot dogs (pork or vegan) like the ultra-megadog (double dog on a toasted banh mi roll, miso whiz, hand cut fries, caramelized onion and 420 island sauce). Sundays they serve dim sum from 10 a.m.-3 p.m.

Noah’s Ark Ristorante

2400 Ingersoll

A Des Moines staple, the Lacona family opened Noah’s in 1946. Enjoy classic Italian dishes like veal alla mozzarella, Calabrese style lasagne, or the fried chicken, pizza and steak. Don’t pass up the complimentary garlic knots and try to save room for a slice of the San Francisco blackout cake, lemon fantasy, coconut whiteout cake or chocolate windmill cake.

Sakari Sushi Lounge

2605 Ingersoll

As the name suggests, sushi is the specialty at Sakari. Besides nigiri and sashimi, there is also a vegetarian roll menu and specialty rolls including the Iowa surf and turf (it includes bacon-wrapped tempura shrimp) and the Bruce Lee (spicy tuna and crab mix, mango, cucumber, tempura, spicy may and unagi sauce, topped with tobiko). If sushi isn’t your thing there is also teriyaki and noodle dishes.

Star Bar

2811 Ingersoll

Share small plates (edamame, garlic and Parmesan fries, stir fried green beans, to name a few) with a group or order a big plate (fish and chips, Cajun pasta, blackened catfish tacos), burger or salad. They have a full bar and also a brunch menu on weekends.

Uncle Wendell’s BBQ, Catering and Bakery

2716 Ingersoll

When you’re in the mood for BBQ, go for the brisket, pulled pork or pulled chicken sandwich. Get baked beans or potato salad on the side and order a cookie or dutch letter for dessert. If you’re not in the mood for a sandwich try the jambalaya with hot pepper corn bread.

The Waverly

2120 Ingersoll

A bar and grill, The Waverly serves up burgers, sandwiches and pizza for dinner on weeknights when they open at 4 p.m., and lunch and dinner on weekends when they open at 11 a.m. Keep your eye out, they are expanding their hours soon.

Zanzibar’s Coffee Adventure

2723 Ingersoll

Get caffeinated with an espresso, brew of the day, tea or italian soda. Enjoy a small breakfast menu all day long (eggs, toasts, english muffins) or grab a danish, muffin, scone, or biscotti. You can also try a fruit or coffee smoothie.

Zimm’s Food & Spirits

3124 Ingersoll

Zimm’s offers lots of appetizers like macho nachos, chicken wings, onion rings, and loaded skins to order while you belly up to the bar. They also offer a different super supper saver each night from 4 p.m.-9 p.m.

While driving down Ingersoll, you will also notice a few local chains. There are at least two locations in the metro of each of these restaurants.
