New food ordering app makes The Hall even cooler
The Hall at The Foundry is set for its grand opening on the 28th. Take a peek inside and at some dishes from one of the food trucks that will be a regular at the space. Brian Powers/The Register
It hasn't even been open for two months, but The Hall is already impressing both diners and drinkers around Des Moines.
The Hall DSM, a new dining concept that combines food trucks with an extensive bar, opened in October at The Foundry in Valley Junction. Each day the large, open German beer hall-style space features a different food truck from its rotating roster. Local favorites like 515 Pi, Bahn ME and Curbin' Cuisine often make appearances.
On weekends, there are sometimes as many as four trucks parked outside. On a particular Tuesday night visit the food truck de jour was The Big Red Food Truck.
There is a food ordering station on one end of The Hall, but when you're locked in a high-stakes game of trivia or the line is too long, customers also have the option to order food from a newly launched app.
Simply download the app, view the selections, add items to your cart, enter payment information, place your order and — voila! — your name appears on a big screen indicating that your meal is being prepped. When you're food is ready, your name moves. It was smart, seamless and unlike anything I've ever seen.
The other awesome thing about the app is that it links directly to The Hall's page on Untapped for easier beer browsing. (Note: You still have to order your drinks through a server.) The app also lets you collect points for each dollar spent on food that earns you rewards.
The Big Red Food Truck is known for their tacos, so we ordered Shon's Famous Fried Taco and a Fabulous Fish taco, plus some other snacks to serve as "brain food" for our hungry friends as we competed for the trivia trophy.
The best way to describe the tacos is: BIG. The "Famous" taco had all of your traditional taco fillings — ground beef, lettuce, cheese, tomato, salsa and sour cream — wrapped in a face-sized fried flatbread. It was certainly filling and the unconventional tortilla added a new texture to your standard taco.
The fish version was just as big and featured three fried flounder fillets topped with a slaw and creamy chipotle aioli, all inside their signature fried flatbread. If a taco wasn't so messy by nature, you definitely could have shared both of these. Good thing I had a good beer nearby to wash down my big mouthfuls.
The Hall has a wide selection of beer, from domestic favorites like Bud Light to authentic German lagers and plenty of local and national breweries in between. Non-beer drinkers can also find something to imbibe on their wine or cocktail menus. There is even a Horizon Line Coffee bar tucked in the back corner!
With large TVs perfect for watching sports games, a rotating selection of drinks and a cutting-edge system that makes ordering food as easy as online shopping, there are plenty of reasons to head to The Hall.
