Food Network says this Ankeny bakery has the best cakes in Iowa
A Florida bakery is decorating Star Wars-themed cakes in anticipation for the latest film, 'Star Wars: The Force Awakens.'
From pillowy raspberry-white chocolate scones to aromatic sweet cinnamon rolls and iced sugar cookies, it's no wonder this bakery is getting a national nod from a culinary giant.
Owners Rachael Owens, 37, and Michelle Lindell, 33, opened Sweet to Eat in December 2014.
"I'm really good at baking and I had my own business out of my home selling at the Farmers' Market," Owens said. "And Michelle is the cake decorator, and she was doing the same thing out of her home."
The two hit it off, became close friends and opened their business together — Owens bakes and Lindell decorates.
Sweet to Eat was originally located in its own storefront in Uptown Ankeny, but moved into the entrance of The Fletcher Kitchen + Bar in September.
At the entrance to the restaurant, a tempting display case is filled with an assortment of cookies, cupcakes and bars for purchase.
And Sweet to Eat makes custom cakes for upcoming special events and occasions — in 40 available flavors including chocolate, vanilla, almond, champagne and strawberry. The bakery uses only buttercream icing or fondant for decorating its personalized cakes.
The bakery supplies The Fletcher with fresh loaves of bread like brioche, baguettes, ciabatta and sourdough to use in its recipes, and desserts like cheesecake and chocolate cake.
Owens said since Sweet to Eat's business continues to grow, she and Lindell are happy with their new location for the bakery.
"Looking at the list of Sweet to Eat’s specialty cake flavors will likely trigger nostalgia," Food Network wrote. "There’s Cookie Dough, Banana Split, S’mores and a Hostess number that’s reminiscent of its namesake treat. Owner Rachael Owens’ top-notch version includes housemade chocolate cake, buttercream and the signature glossy ganache."
