Welcome back, Donut King!
It's been more than two years since the popular snack shop closed its doors at 220 Grand Ave. in West Des Moines.
On Saturday morning, not only does Donut King return, it comes back at two locations — 3304 E. University Ave. across from the entrance to the Iowa State Fairgrounds and 3802 Ingersoll Ave. inside Bauder's.
Loyal fans and customers will be treated to all of the same doughnuts that Lou King offered for more than 40 years at the old West Des Moines location, including honey-dipped (glazed), chocolate-frosted, toasted coconut, long johns, pecan and chocolate rolls, and powdered and sprinkled doughnuts.
"I never wanted to leave in the first place," King said. "But everything is going to be the same."
King, who started working at Donut King in 1964 when he was still in high school (the shop was called Mister Donut then), has partnered with Mark Graziano, owner of Bauder's, to bring Donut King back to the metro.
The east-side location fills the space where Palazzo's Java House used to be. It will have doughnuts for carry-out only from 6 a.m. to noon six days a week (closed on Mondays.) Doughnuts will be available for eat-in or carry-out at the Bauder's location, which is open from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily, except on Mondays when it's closed.
King said that with the extended hours of the Bauder's location, choices and varieties may dwindle in the afternoon, but they will still be available.
