Donut fans will be able to satisfy their cravings at a new shop in downtown Des Moines soon.

ChuChu Donuts is projected to open during the second week of August at 550 SW 9th St., #5108 in the new Cityville on 9th apartment community.

"I'm excited, but at the same time, I'm nervous," said owner Kim Chu-Inn, 35. She will operate the store with her husband, Sena Inn, 42, who is a professional baker and will train the team of employees to make the doughnuts.

Des Moines Dining Guides:

The shop will specialize in both fried and cake donuts in assorted flavors and topped with a wide variety of glazes and sprinkles.

Filled donuts will be made fresh to order with five or six cream and jelly flavors. "That's one of the things that customers really love about our shop," Chu-Inn said.

Premium baked goods like apple fritters and cinnamon rolls also will be found there. And guests can enjoy bottled soft drinks and coffees to go along with their sweet treats.

Chu-Inn said the base price for a Chu Chu donut is 99 cents, or about $10 for a dozen assorted. The price goes up for premium or specialty doughnuts.

Chu-Inn and Inn sold Chu Chu Donuts in Ankeny to its current owners, who changed the name to Ambrosia Donuts shortly thereafter. But Chu-Inn wanted to bring the business closer to her home in Des Moines.

In 2016, Only In Your State listed ChuChu Donuts second in a list of donut shops that "Will Have Your Mouth Watering Uncontrollably."

Chu-Inn and Inn are Cambodian and immigrated to the United States from Thailand in 1992.

Chu-Inn is looking forward to getting the new location up and running and seeing everyone again. "I want to say 'thank you' to all our customers that have had our donuts and for being loyal and for being very supportive," Chu-Inn said.
