Got stress? This drink has the antidote.

Moo Lab, a new pop-up featuring “moon milk” and cow cuddles at Iowa State University, will help students de-stress with dairy.

A collaboration between Midwest Dairy and the Dairy Science Club, the event at the Memorial Union will connect harried Gen Z college students with curated comforts — from cow cuddles to a crave-able dairy beverage known as “moon milk.”

Moon milk is an Ayurvedic health and wellness drink that is usually made from a blend of cow's milk, honey and cinnamon. But ingredients with vibrant natural colors such as activated charcoal, matcha powder, turmeric and beetroot extract are added for picture-worthy presentations.

Moo Lab baristas will be serving several variations of the warm, frothy Instagram-friendly beverage that Health magazine describes as “a trendy new insomnia fighter … popping up all over social media, often in colorful hues.”

On the menu

Moo Lab will be serving three different varieties of comfort in cups:

  • Udder Darkness — coffee concentrate, activated charcoal, whiskey and brandy extracts, maple syrup
  • Moo & Gold — ginger, turmeric, cinnamon, black pepper, honey
  • Red Velvet Moo-Shine — dark chocolate, beet, sea salt, tart cherry, coconut sweetener

According to Alyson Fendrick, a registered dietitian with Midwest Dairy, milk contains the amino acid tryptophan — often associated with turkey — and melatonin that promote relaxation.

“Milk is like a natural sleep aid that also supplies a boost of nutrition, including eight grams of high-quality protein, in one serving.”

As part of the concurrent #cupsofcomfort campaign, students are invited to share their unique moon milk creations on Instagram, using provided props like flower petals, succulents and stones — along with their ideas on how to bring more comfort to the world — for a chance to win a $50 gift card for dairy treats.

To make your own moon milk at home, there are plenty of traditional and outside-the-box recipes online at places like bonappetit.com, mindbodygreen.com and letseatcake.com. You can even use milk alternatives if you're vegan or lactose-intolerant.
