Sinatra well said it: if you can make it in New York, you can make it anywhere… and what better way to do than by selling 24-karat gold-coated chicken wings? Buzz60's Maria Mercedes Galuppo has more.

A popular taco restaurant in Urbandale is closing briefly to make way for a sports pub.

Taco Hangover at 3701 NW 86th St. will close Saturday and reopen as Saints on Jan. 7. Changes will be made to the decor and signage during that transition period.

"We're excited to bring a concept that we've been working on in Kansas City to the Urbandale area," said Bradley Gilmore, culinary director for restaurant group Riley Drive Entertainment Concepts. "This location of Taco Hangover is too close to the West Des Moines location and we think a neighborhood bar will do great in Urbandale."

A newly revamped menu will be introduced that will make its way across all Saints' locations.

"The new Saints focus is about chef-driven food but nothing too crazy," Gilmore said. "It's more of an approach to cleaner cooking in a sports pub atmosphere."

Gilmore said the transition will include more from-scratch items from the pub grub-style kitchen:

  • About a dozen varieties of burgers
  • Tacos
  • Around 15 kinds of sandwiches
  • Bangers and mash
  • Pot roast
  • Chicken-fried pork

Appetizers will range from the Saints' beer cheese queso locals know to some new items like hot fries — french fries tossed in Sriracha seasoning.

There will be a new chicken section on the menu called 'Wings and Things' which will include favorites like bone-in traditional wings, hand-breaded boneless wings, pig wings — pork shanks with Asian glaze and a blend of shredded cabbage — and 'Maverick Shrimp' tossed in Boom Boom sauce.

New activities will be introduced such as table games and tablets for trivia along with game-watch parties featuring giveaways

"We want to make it into the best place in town to watch a game," Gilmore said, mentioning that more TVs will be added to the dining space during the brief closing period.

Saints will feature a full bar with specialty mules and 20 beers on tap, including local and domestic offerings, and bottled beer available in buckets. Non-alcoholic beverages like hand-crafted soda and juice blends will also be available.

This will make the sixth Saints location. It will join Beaverdale and Waukee locations in the metro, along with one in Ottumwa, one in Independence, Missouri and another in Lenexa City Center in southwest Kansas City.

In 2016, the Saints Pub + Patio location in West Des Moines became a Taco Hangover location.

The restaurant group, Riley Drive Entertainment Concepts, also plan to open a restaurant called Union 29 at Jordan Creek Mall in March 2019. Besides Taco Hangover and Saints Pub + Patio, the company is behind Tonic bars and Ignite Wood Fire Grill restaurants.
