You'll soon be able to get a slice of pizza and a shot on Court Avenue in Des Moines for $5.

Yes, you read that right.

Scotty's Slices and Shots is coming to 204 Fourth St., Suite 450 on the first floor of The Randolph building in downtown Des Moines. Scotty's will be located between 1908 Draught House and the forthcoming Vietnamese restaurant, Pho Real.

The restaurant will serve pizza by the slice, whole pies, tacos, draft and bottled beer and cocktails — with a special slice and shot of the day. Slices and pies will be available in a variety of topping combinations.

"I want it to be fast," owner Scott Thomas said. "Nothing's faster than a shot and a slice of pizza. It takes one minute for the slice to be heated and paired with a shot."

Slices of pizza will be a generous one-fourth of a 14-inch pie, New York-style, with plenty of cheese.

"I like mine with more and more cheese," Thomas said, "so I want my customers to have that."

Whole 14-inch pies with hand-rolled dough will start at $10.77 and upgrade from there with topping choices like Graziano's sausage. Thick-crust pies will also be available.

Tacos will be catered in from Thomas' food truck, Scotty's Food Shack — fried taco shells filled with ground beef with melted cheese, lettuce, tomato, onion and shredded cheese with salsa and sour cream on the side.

Thomas said he is hoping to open the restaurant on St. Patrick's Day — Sunday, March 17. The $5 shot and slice special will be in effect upon opening.

Thomas also owns Scotty's Pub and Grub at 3781 EP True Parkway in West Des Moines.

Thomas, a Roosevelt High School and UNI graduate and 17-year real estate veteran, said most prices on all of his menu items end in the number 77 in honor of his son's football jersey — his son is a sophomore at Valley High School.

Thomas also has a 10-year-old son and a daughter who is a senior and is planning to attend the University of Iowa in the fall. He includes his children in the daily operations of his businesses to teach them about entrepreneurship.

Decor in the space will honor Thomas' Irish heritage.

The restaurant will seat 20-30 people and employ eight to 10. Thomas said he signed a 25-year lease for the space that will feature chairs with rails for standing. "I want people to feel like they can stop in late night (or) at 1:30 in the morning for pizzas to take home." There will also be delivery options through local services.

Pizzas will be cooked using an electronic oven that bakes the pies in four minutes.

Shots will differ daily and Thomas said he plans to offer breakfast pizza and breakfast shots in flavors like fruit loops cereal or pancakes and syrup. Beer choices will include domestic and local Iowa brews.

Scotty's Pub and Grub has been open for just over a year and since then, Thomas has added 50 more seats with an outdoor patio. The restaurant is known for its daily food and drink specials like buckets of tallboys burgers, wings and pizza.

Scotty's Slices and Shots will be open daily from 11 a.m. to 2 a.m. Food will be served later on the weekends until 3 a.m.
