“The Social Club marks its tenth year in existence and fifth year at the Firehouse this May," said Chuck Current, Executive Director of the Des Moines Social Club. The idea behind Scenic Route Bakery came about 10 years ago from daughter and father team, Katy and Mark Nelson.

Katy graduated from the DMACC Culinary Institute and Chicago’s French Pastry School. Mark, who comes from an engineering and military background, dreamed of opening a business that honors people’s talents and skills and helps them grow in their life journey.

The duo opened the Scenic Route Bakery’s original location in late 2014 in the Des Moines’ East Village, serving pastries, coffee and espresso drinks, soups, sandwiches, and other light fare for breakfast and lunch.

Scenic Route Bakery joins the Civic Music Association, HomeDitty and Malo as tenants at the 30,000-square-foot campus.
