Celebrity chef and Food Network star Alton Brown showed Des Moines some foodie love this week.

Fong's Pizza made the national spotlight on April 8 when the Cooking Channel, owned by Food Network, featured the infamous crab rangoon pizza on "Best Thing I Ever Ate."

"The thing I like most about Fong's of the fourteen hundred pizzas they make there a week, at least half of them are crab rangoon pizzas," Alton Brown said on the show. "I've never seen that before and I think that it's perfect."

On the segment, Fong's Pizza's general manager, Nicholas Brink, gives a demo of how the popular restaurant constructs the pizza. Homemade crust is spread with a base of whipped cream cheese, sour cream and crab meat substitute. Then the pizza is topped with green onion, asiago and mozzarella and baked. Finally, it's topped with crispy wontons for a crunch and a drizzle of sweet chili sauce in a lattice design.

"That's all it is," Brown said. "But it's delicious."

And this isn't the first time Alton Brown has raved about Fong's Pizza. Brown, a Food Network television personality and best-selling, James Beard award-winning cookbook author, has been in Des Moines to perform at least twice.

From 2017: Food Network star came to Des Moines for his 'Eat Your Science' show

On Twitter on Oct. 24, 2017, Food Network asked, "What's your favorite crab dish?" Food Network tweeted the question during the broadcast of popular cooking competition show, Chopped, and used the show's hashtag in the tweet.

Only one minute later, Brown replied, "Crab Rangoon pizza from @FongsPizza."

Earlier that year, Brown was in Des Moines in May 2017 for the second time for his "Alton Brown Live: Eat Your Science" tour. Co-owner Gwen Page said he has eaten at the restaurant twice.

"OK, you have to understand that my favorite restaurant in the world is in Des Moines," Brown said. "I discovered it the last time I was there, and I will be back this time. I will be at Fong's Pizza. Fong's Pizza is the best, which I discovered when I was touring there before. I ate there and I ate at a couple of other little places around town. But Fong's Pizza is absolutely up there, and I can only hope that they'll be reserving a spot to eat for me, as well as a jet fighter helmet for me to wear while I am drinking my kamikaze."

Fong's opened its downtown location at 223 Fourth Street in 2009. Since then, it's been a local favorite and has been recognized nationally for its Asian food-pizza fusion.
