Breakfast at Main Street Cafe and Bakery is a pretty ideal way to start your workday.

Main Street has operated a location in Ankeny since 2015 and expanded in late 2018 with the Des Moines spot — a win for downtown employees who have easy access to the skywalk system.

The fast-casual fare for breakfast and lunch includes enough options to please everyone, in a location that’s convenient.

The atmosphere

My breakfast date and I visited Main Street during a mid-morning lull on a recent Friday.

On the skywalk level above the entrance of the Principal building, this restaurant’s large entrance welcomes guests into a bright, spacious and clean space.

Visiting between meals, we had plenty of table options and snagged one by a sunny window.

The menu

For breakfast, there’s a large selection of “morning quick sandwiches,” scrambles, waffles and French toast.

I went for the triple berry waffles ($9.95), a side of bacon ($2.79) and a protein smoothie ($6.95). My sister picked the steak scramble ($9.50) — a hearty egg dish served with toast and a cup of fresh fruit — and an iced latte ($3.69).

We were both happy with the expansive menu of coffee and smoothie drinks.

Passing by the bakery case, which was stocked with fresh-baked cinnamon rolls, bars and scones, the monster bites ($2.99) caught our eyes, so we opted to share a cup of the snacks made of oats, peanut butter and chocolate.

More:

You might want to check out the lunch menu before your visit if you’re easily bogged down by plenty of options.

There are 13 salads, 12 pastas (including beef brisket mac and cheese — yum!), seven naan flatbreads, nine griddle melts, nine paninis, five wraps, four signature sandwiches and five burgers to choose from.

With all of those options, chances are that you’re bound to find a favorite.
