A little more than a month of its owner died following a massive heart attack, longtime Italian restaurant Sambetti's has closed.

Paul Strome, known for his gregarious hospitality, died unexpectedly on March 25 at the age of 64. Saturday, the restaurant he owned for decades announced on Facebook it closed its doors permanently.

"Thank you for 40 years, Des Moines," the post read. "Sambetti’s deeply misses our Captain Paul. Paul was the face, the brain and the heart of Sambetti’s. Without Paul, daily operations of the restaurant have proven difficult."

Sambetti's had a rich history in Des Moines that spans decades. Strome bought the restaurant from his parents 1985 and moved it to its current location, at 1430 2nd Ave., in 1992.

The restaurant was known for its relaxed atmosphere and approachable food like sausage sandwiches, burgers with crinkle fries, hot wings and its always-available free popcorn. And it was known for Strome.

"The support and care of family, friends, Sambetti’s staff and loyal patrons has been extremely meaningful to all who loved Paul," the Facebook post continued. "While the doors of Sambetti’s will be closing after tonight, your thoughtfulness, loyalty and support will never be forgotten. With sincere gratitude, The family of Paul Strome."

Strome's family had previously told the Register they would continue to operate the restaurant with the help of its staff, some who had worked there for 10 to 25 years.

It is unclear at this time what the future will hold for the location.

"The staff here at Sambettis have no clue what the future plans are," a later Facebook post stated. "... We ask of you to please curb the phone calls inquiring if Sambetti's is for sale as staff do not know that answer."

"Well, the last direct lineage on the clock of Paul Strome has clocked out and has ended her shift," a third Facebook post read. "Thank you from the bottom of our hearts Emily Thompson for 14 years of dedication to Sambetti's customers, friends and family and to your dear Uncle Paul."
