On May 10, Riccelli's Italian Restaurant posted on its Facebook page that it was reopening on May 11.

"Come on into Riccelli's," the restaurant wrote in a post on May 11. "We’re open right now everything’s fresh we have new fish to our menu including tuna and flounder and we also have new cheesecake flavors including Oreo, strawberry, cherry and turtle so come on into Riccelli's and eat."

Since announcing its reopening, Riccelli's has posted pictures of its dishes including Italian-style chicken livers, broiled shrimp, Italian-style cottage fries, seasoned green beans, angel hair pasta, filet mignon and N.Y. Strip steak.

A food safety inspection on March 14 from the Department of Inspections and Appeals found several repeat violations. Since July 2016, Riccelli's has had nine routine, recheck and follow-up inspections.

Opening in 1964, Riccelli's has been serving Italian-American food on Des Moines' south side. The popular steak dinner with salad, potato, fresh bread and a side of spaghetti has been a favorite among diners for 55 years.

The restaurant was originally owned by Pete Riccelli, who began his long restaurant career at the age of 11 as a dishwasher for Pasquale Crivaro's Garden of Italy cafe at 1225 High St.

Riccelli's was not his first restaurant or business. He opened The Orchard Inn in 1949 on Fleur Drive and Tally's Restaurant on the corner of Southeast 14th Street and Park Avenue in 1953. He also owned a few mobile home parks in Des Moines.

At one point, Riccelli also owned Riccelli's West at 5717 Ashworth Road and an upscale 1930s-style nightclub called Riccelli's Mainliner at 2017 Southlawn Drive, serving top sirloin steak and lobster for $12.95.

Peter Riccelli passed away in 2009 and the restaurant has been owned and operated by the next generations of the Riccelli family since.
