It's time to plan your ice cream road trip, Des Moines.
The public is invited to dig their spoons into the re-imagined spaces of the Wells Visitor Center and Ice Cream Parlor at 115 Central Avenue NW in Le Mars. The building officially opens its doors at 11 a.m. Wednesday.
Wells’ extensive remodel of the downtown attraction is open to the public as the Ice Cream Capital of the World kicks off its Sesquicentennial and annual Ice Cream Days celebrations. The attraction was formerly known as the Blue Bunny Ice Cream Parlor.
“Our goal from the beginning was to create a space where people can immerse themselves in the history of Wells and ice cream and to make this space and the community a travel destination," Mike Wells, President and CEO said. "I think we’ve delivered on that goal, and I’m excited to unveil the final product after nearly a year of construction."
Visitors of all ages can now enjoy exhibits highlighting Wells' history and heritage along with interactive exhibits showing how Wells makes its signature flavors.
Visitors can enjoy a scoop of ice cream while taking in Wells’ ice cream heritage or experience downtown Le Mars’ first outdoor rooftop seating area.
An expanded menu includes extreme shakes and desserts like the Molten Chocolate Lava Shake with molten lava cake served with chocolate ice cream, chocolate whipped cream and hot fudge topped with cookies and cream mini swirl cone; or the Monster Peanut Butter Cup Sundae, served in a schooner glass rimmed with white chocolate, peanut butter, peanut butter cups and peanut butter candy pieces, filled with chocolate-peanut butter ice cream and topped with whipped cream and drizzled with peanut butter sauce and hot fudge — and garnished with more peanut butter cups and peanut butter candy pieces.
The expansion into the neighboring building includes a new Events Center which is available to rent for meetings or parties. Wells hopes to draw people from all over the nation to this new attraction in Le Mars which was dubbed the Ice Cream Capital of the World in 1994.
