A local food truck was recently included in a roundup on Food Network's website.

Top Bun Food Truck, a popular food truck based in Des Moines, was featured in an article titled "50 States of Food Trucks" on Food Network.

Owned by Dave Barry, Top Bun features burgers, sandwiches and sides including fries and tater tots in locations all over town.

"I was really excited when I found out about that," Barry, 37, said. "It was a rewarding feeling to put so much hard work and so much time into opening the truck and getting the truck established. Just being recognized and recommended by (Food Network) was very rewarding and made me feel very good, obviously."

Food Network reached out to Barry about a month ago and informed him he was in the running to represent Iowa in the roundup. The article was released on June 12.

"Dave Barry is a proud Iowan, so it should come as no surprise that locally sourced ingredients are a priority for Top Bun, his Des Moines-based burger truck," Food Network's article says. "He sources local beef, local buns and hoagie rolls, and Italian sausage meatballs from renowned Graziano Brothers for his USS Torpedo, a meatball-, red sauce- and provolone-stuffed hoagie."

Top sellers from Top Bun

Here are a few crowd favorites from Top Bun, according to Barry:

  • Top Bun: The No. 1 seller is this classic one-third-pound burger with lettuce, tomato, onion, pickle and American cheese with the option to top it with a fried egg or bacon.
  • Flyin' Hawaiian: A burger with grilled pineapple, roasted red peppers, provolone, red onion and teriyaki mayo.
  • Outlaw: Burger with onion rings, bacon, jalapenos, barbecue sauce and American cheese.
  • Truffle Fries and Truffle Tots: Fries or tots tossed in truffle oil and topped with Parmesan and spicy mayo.

Top Bun Food Truck uses many local vendors including Graziano for sausage and South Union Bakery for its buns, hoagies and sliced bread. "I spent a lot of time finding the perfect bun to showcase our food on and nothing else came close," Barry said. "I believe they have the best product in town."

Top Bun's schedule is updated on its website and Facebook frequently and operates with a crew of 2 to 5 employees, depending on how busy the day is projected to be.

The truck shows up at office parks, the Capitol, downtown at the Pappajohn Sculpture Park and public events including the upcoming 80/35 Music Festival in July. The truck can also be booked for catering and private events like graduation parties and weddings.

For added convenience, online ordering is also available from Top Bun. Customers can choose and pay for items from the menu on the website, choose a pickup time and then receive a text message when the order is ready.

Barry bought a delivery truck in November 2015 and spent 10 months converting it into a food truck. Top Bun officially opened in September 2016.

"We're constantly coming up with new and fresh ideas as far as the menu goes," Barry said. "We have certain specialty staples on the menu, but at times I get bored and I'll just take something off the menu and substitute with something else for a week."

Barry credits his wife of 11 years, Jamie, 33, for her role in the day-to-day operation of Top Bun.

"She helps me out a lot," Barry said. "From helping me keep food stocked to running errands to when I am in crisis mode, she's always there to help me out if someone doesn't show up or if we run out of food because the last thing I want to do is close my window or tell somebody that I ran out of something. She's a big part in helping me be successful."

Barry is not currently considering opening a restaurant but thinks it would be something he would be interested in doing in the future. He's currently exploring the possibility of opening a food truck with a more permanent location and an outdoor patio.

The Barrys have three children and have lived on the south side for 13 years.
