A popular restaurant along the Great Western Trail in Des Moines is closing after over four decades serving pizza and beer to bikers and other customers in Des Moines.
Orlondo's On Park Bar & Grill, located at 4337 Park Ave. in Des Moines, announced it will close on July 27. The restaurant has operated for 41 years and has been a regular stop for cyclists on the Iowa trail system and for south-side residents.
"I'm turning 65 and it's just time," owner Patrick Renda said. "After 41 years, that's pretty much my heart and soul in it."
Orlondo's is known for its Italian-American specialties — especially pizza — along with appetizers like onion rings, Italian nachos, sandwiches and pasta dishes. Produce for many of its dishes are grown on-site.
A special love for many restaurant-goers is the homemade creamy Italian dressing that comes on the restaurant's cheese-topped salads.
"You can’t get rid of me," Renda said. "I’m just taking a break from this building. I'm not closing Orlondo's forever. I'm taking a break from the restaurant and I'm going to get more into the grocery stores."
It's unknown yet what tenant may take over the business once Renda's lease is finished.
Renda will continue to sell his dressings and seasonings through Hy-Vee distribution and has expanded across the state. "I'm going to retire and sell my salad dressings in grocery stores," Renda said.
