This James Beard roasted turkey recipe honors the great American cook’s gourmet-style approach to the Thanksgiving bird. Grateful
Recently, the chef and co-owner of Table 128 in Clive, Lynn Pritchard, was invited to cook dinner at the James Beard House in the West Village of New York City.
Another Iowa chef will be cooking at the culinary landmark next week.
The James Beard Foundation recently announced that Kevin Scharpf of Brazen Open Kitchen + Bar, located at 955 Washington St. in Dubuque, will be cooking at the landmark James Beard House on Nov. 14.
"The Beard House is delighted to welcome chef Kevin Scharpf and the team from Brazen Open Kitchen," said Izabela Wojcik, director of House Programming at the James Beard Foundation. "Not only is it chef Kevin’s debut, but we’ve only featured a couple of chefs from Iowa in our 33-year history. That only adds to the excitement and uniqueness of this dinner."
According to the Brazen Open Kitchen website, Scharpf hails from Galena, Illinois, and attended Le Cordon Bleu of Culinary Arts in Minneapolis. Scharpf has an impressive restaurant history, including La Fougasse at the Hotel Sofitel in Minneapolis, Restaurant Daniel in New York City and Diamond Jo in Dubuque.
A year ago, Scharpf competed in season 16 of Bravo's "Top Chef."
"It was clear from the start that Brazen Open Kitchen has a winning combination of Midwestern warmth and creative, approachable cooking," Wojcik said. "And the Beard House menu reads like all the fall flavors you want to eat. Paired with great wines, it’s going to be a stunning dinner.”
In 2015, Scharpf opened Brazen Open Kitchen & Bar and has been named one of Full Service Restaurant Magazine’s “40 Under 40 Rising Stars.”
Scharpf also works hand-in-hand with small farms in the Dubuque area to source ingredients for the restaurant's menu.
“To be passionate about something is one thing, to be lucky enough to be surrounded by people that share the same passion with you is far more special," said Scharpf. "Receiving an invitation to cook at The James Beard House is very special, and is a testament to the work that happens at Brazen. I’m proud of this team and constantly humbled by their accomplishments.”
Beginning with a fundraising dinner cooked by Wolfgang Puck in early 1987, the James Beard House has become a milestone in the careers of chefs, including Tom Colicchio, Marcus Samuelsson, Nancy Silverton and Dominique Crenn.
Table 128's Pritchard cooked for the James Beard House on Sept. 24.
