This East Village burger joint was named 'most vegan-friendly restaurant in the state'
An East Village eatery serving handmade meatless burgers was featured in a national publication for its fast vegan food.
Dirt Burger,407 E. Fifth St. in Des Moines, was featured in "The Most Vegan-Friendly Restaurant in Every State" listicle from The Daily Meal, an online publication specializing in food and drink content.
The restaurant serves vegan fast food revolving around its flagship product: a vegan patty made with ingredients from local and regional farms.
"Rest assured, there’s no dirt in the burgers at Dirt Burger," The Daily Meal's Taylor Rock writes. "This quick-service vegan restaurant, located in Des Moines, Iowa, makes nutrient-dense plant-based burgers without sacrificing taste or burning a hole in your pocket."
Rock worked with Yelp to create the list by examining restaurants with the terms "vegan" and "plant-based" in their reviews.
Dirt Burger, a fast-casual concept, opened in July, serving burgers, fries and sodas with a focus on veganism, simplicity and sustainability.
The vegan patty recipe contains about 20 ingredients that can all grow in Iowa.
There's buckwheat, black gram beans, ground vegetables, gluten-free grains, lentils and soaked chickpeas. Everything is ground together for texture.
Then, spices and seasonings are stirred in, along with brewer's yeast and coconut amino acids — a soy sauce alternative.
Dipping sauces include nam chim sweet and sour sesame sauce, spirulina green goddess dressing, homemade ketchup, vegan mayo and vegan ranch dressing.
Fries are made from chemical-free Idaho potatoes, hand-cut and cooked in organic safflower and coconut oil.
Dirt Burger uses only compostable packaging in its effort to become a zero-waste facility.
