Lengthy menu, chill atmosphere make Hana Ramen Sushi a gem in West Des Moines
Tucked away in the center of the Bridgewood Plaza across from Jordan Creek Town Center, Hana Ramen Sushi is an unassuming, developing venue that I had yet to visit.
With minimal preconceived expectations, I went on this dining venture nearly blind. My friend and I stepped in and were seated immediately upon entry and were greeted by our server soon after.
What we ordered
The lengthy menu here spans from the standard sushi specials, various types of ramen, several salads and all kinds of traditional Japanese cuisine. Having been years since I had sampled any, I ordered tako yaki, which remains a rarity for the metro.
While these ball-shaped, octopus-filled treats weren’t fresh off an Osaka-based machine they were prepared expertly nonetheless and had a unique presentation. The main course was difficult to narrow down. My friend went with the king roll and I ordered two entrees to share, the triple spicy maki roll and the maki combo roll.
After gulping down our accompanying soup even with just a relatively sparse weekday crowd, our meals were brought out expediently.
The king roll was gloriously assembled, worthy of royalty. The triple spicy maki roll is a set of three rolls in one. It was engrossing to sample salmon, tuna, and yellowtail all at once. Maki combo was not quite on the same level but the signature California roll was the most memorable I had experienced in a long time. After consuming our full entrees we were both left content.
The lighting scheme is not unlike an EDM club with bright neon. The vibe is about as chill as they come without sacrificing a lively nature.
Even as an increasing number of sushi joints pop up in the city, I foresee Hana Ramen being a mainstay for years to come.
