Old Crow Medicine Show will open for Brandi Carlile on Friday at the Ravinia Festival in Illinois.

They trade places Saturday, with Carlile performing before Old Crow's headlining set at the Hinterland Music Festival in St. Charles.

Carlile has been a regular performer in the Des Moines area over the years at venues like Hoyt Sherman Place and the Nitefall on the River concert series. Saturday, she'll perform for her largest area crowd to date, as many as 8,000 Hinterland attendees.

Carlile released "The Firewatcher's Daughter" this year, her fifth album and first since leaving Columbia Records. The album was recorded live, with her and regular collaborators Tim and Phil Hanseroth and other musicians playing together in the same room. The Hanseroth twins' work is more prominently featured with vocal harmonies on this album than it was on past Carlile releases, though their contributions have been abundantly clear at Carlile's live shows for years.

"The Firewatcher's Daughter" owes a debt to Fleetwood Mac. "The Eye" has a "Landslide"-esque feel to it and Carlile has been covering "The Chain" regularly in concerts. Her version of the Fleetwood Mac hit isn't on the album (you'll have to catch her live to hear it), but "The Firewatcher's Daughter" does feature a cover The Avett Brothers' "Murder in the City."

Back in Des Moines

If you want rather attend an after party at a bar, Wooly's, 504 E. Locust St. in Des Moines, will host two Hinterland after parties. TV on the Radio plays a DJ set starting at 11 a.m. Friday. Admission is $5 and a Hinterland wristband is required. Dead Larry plays starting at 11 p.m. Saturday, with $5 admission or free with a Hinterland wristband.

Food for campers

Local Yocals, chef Jeremy Jessen's locally sourced food stand, has put together the LoYo Diner for Hinterland, serving traditional diner items like blueberry pancakes, buttermilk biscuits and gravy, BLTs and more.

A general store will also be open 24-7 in the camping area.

For the kids

Children younger than 12 get into Hinterland free with a paying adult and the festival will have a special Kinderland area dedicated to kids. On Friday, there will be coloring stations with every kid getting a Hinterland coloring book designed by Kinderland organizer Ramona Muse Lambert. On Saturday, kids can help create a concert-themed mural and participate in a live feed music video.
