Beaverdale Superhero 5K

Saturday: Spider-Man, Green Lantern and the odd Sleepwalker and Paste Pot Pete will run in the Beaverdale Superhero 5K, a running event where superhero costumes are encouraged and proceeds go to the Everybody Wins mentoring program. Cinco de Mayo Festival

Saturday: Valley Junction hosts its 11th annual Cinco de Mayo Festival from noon-10 p.m. on Fifth Street in West Des Moines. There will be vendors, folk dancers and music by Mariachi Zapata, Tony Valdez Large Band and others. Free. Go to

Downtown Farmers' Market

Saturday: The Downtown Farmers' Market returns to Court District from 7 a.m.-noon. More than 400 farmers, artists and other vendors will be on hand, along with music by Matt Woods and others. It's time to get some fresh food right from the source. Free. Go to

Laser Blaster Ball

Fantasy Nerd Roast

Saturday: Comedians from Des Moines and Omaha will dress up as Marvel and DC superheroes and roast each other at the Fantasy Nerd Roast starting at 9 p.m. in The Basement at the Des Moines Social Club, 900 Mulberry St. Superman, Batman, Bwana Beast, Spider-Man, Punisher, Daredevil and others will be on hand to settle which is truly the greatest comic book company.
