Three Qs: Joe Kiplinger

Joe Kiplinger, 36, plays guitar in the karaoke band Party! Party! 9:30 p.m. Wednesdays at The Keg Stand, 3530 Westown Parkway, West Des Moines, 9:30 p.m. Sunday at Hessen Haus, 101 Fourth St. and 9:30 p.m. Tuesday at Gas Lamp, 1501 Grand Ave.

Q: What songs have you learned most recently, and are there songs you’re getting a lot of requests to learn right now?

One we just started playing is Black Keys’ “Gold on the Ceiling.” That was getting requested a lot. We just put in Tracy Chapman’s “Give Me One Reason” and “Let it Go” from “Frozen.” We’re trying to get more girl songs going, but there doesn’t seem to be quite as many of them. We’re back in learning mode right now, we’re going to start adding a couple more songs every two weeks. Right now we’re sitting at 230 songs.

Q: What are your favorite and least favorite songs to play?

My favorites change depending on how often they get played. One that always gets me excited is “Where is My Mind” by The Pixies. I don’t like to say my least favorite, but between you, me and the wall, “American Pie” has no business being eight minutes long.

Q: Is there a key to being good at karaoke?

I can’t stress enough that you need to get the mic close to your mouth. There’s nothing worse than when someone is doing a great job but is holding the mic a foot away.
