Iowa Cubs vs. Round Rock Express
Wednesday-Friday: Celebrate America’s birthday by watching America’s pastime at Principal Park, One Line Drive. The Iowa Cubs take on the Round Rock Express at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. Yankee Doodle Pops
Thursday: The Des Moines Symphony hosts its 22nd annual Yankee Doodle Pops concert at 8:30 p.m. on the West Terrace of the Iowa State Capitol, 1007 E. Grand Ave. This year’s theme is “America’s Musical Heartland,” with a newly-commissioned piece, “Symphony on a Stick” and a selection of pieces from “The Bridges of Madison County” conducted by Jason Robert Brown. ‘Tootsie’ & First Friday
Thursday-Friday: The Des Moines Art Center, 4500 Grand Ave., hosts an outdoor screening of the Dustin Hoffman classic “Tootsie” starting at about 9 p.m. Thursday. The film tells the story of an actor who disguises himself as a woman to win an acting part. On Friday, Boomerang performs in the Art Center courtyard. Free for the film, $5 for First Friday. Friday: The Science Center of Iowa, 401 W. Martin Luther King Jr. Parkway, hosts its monthly Mixology Night from 5:30-9 p.m. This month’s theme is “Christmas in July” and features music by The Tarakis, as well as science experiments aimed at adults. $5. Go to sciowa.org.
