Q: Tell us about your new album, “Cocktail.”
This is a CD that I released a few months ago featuring some great Chicago musicians. It’s really been a dream come true for me. This is the album I’ve always wanted to record and I was so pleased with how everything turned out and how amazingly everyone played on it. I’m excited to share it with people in Des Moines.
Q: What was your experience like with a new music scene when you moved to Chicago from Des Moines?
I would say I was never really immersed in the music scene in Iowa. I left there in high school and only came back for a short time after college. It wasn’t enough time to get things going there. The Chicago scene is incredibly warm and embracing and from what I’ve heard it’s hard to find anywhere else like that other than Des Moines. I’m excited to come back.
Q: What else do you have coming up?
I’ve got some fun gigs coming up in Chicago; there’s a great series directed by the Jazz Institute of Chicago called NextGenJazz that I’ll be performing three shows for. Then it’s just a variety of stuff. I’m currently at a festival in California and they invited me back for next year, which hopefully will turn into a tour. We’ll see where else it takes us.
