13 essential songs from 2015 Little BIG Fest performers

Little BIG Fest , the annual roots, bluegrass and jam festival delivered by the Des Moines Music Coalition, is set to deliver a day packed with performances on Dec. 5.

Featuring both homegrown and national talent, the event’s scheduled to kick off at Wooly’s in the East Village Saturday afternoon, running late into the night with an after party slated at Lefty’s Live Music in the Drake neighborhood. Grammy Award-nominated artist John Fullbright is tapped as the event’s headliner, with names such as J.E. Sunde, Bob Pace, The Pines, Matt Woods, Dan Tedesco and more filling out the bill.

In anticipation of the 11th installment of Little BIG Fest here are 13 songs — one for each artist performing Saturday— to get your ears primed for the day's festivities.

River Glen — “Who Gave You Them Blues”

The track comes off of the “Pull My Hair” LP. The Dubuque-based group was voted in as this year's community selected artist.

Performing: 2:30 p.m. at Wooly’s

David Zollo & The Body Electric — “Ain’t No God but God”

This song appeared on the "For Hire" album from Zollo. He's also scheduled to at Prairie Meadows in Altoona on Dec. 4.

Performing: 3:15 p.m. at Wooly’s

Heath Alan Band — "He’s Back In Town"

Throughout his career Alan’s played the likes of the Iowa State Fair, Kansas City Jazz Festival and more.

Performing: 4 p.m. at Wooly’s

Bob Pace — “Rockin’ and Rollin’”

A Des Moines blues staple, Pace appears regularly at Gas Lamp’s Friday afternoon Work Release show.

Performing: 4:45 p.m. at Wooly’s

J.E. Sunde — “Dog Days of Summer”

The track comes from Sunde’s solo effort, “Shapes That Kiss the Lips of God.” Sunde also performs in Wisconsin-based act The Daredevil Christopher Wright.

Performing: 5:30 p.m. at Wooly’s

Matt Woods — “Sawdust and Gsasoline”

According to Woods' website, the track was recorded live at Alexander Recording Kompany in Ames. The roots number comes off Woods' record with the same name.

Performing: 6:30 p.m. at Wooly’s

The Pines — “All the While”

The Minneapolis-based, Iowa-bred group released this number on its 2012 record, “Dark So Gold.”

Performing: 7:30 p.m. at Wooly’s

Pieta Brown — “Flowers of Love”

The Iowa-born artist released the LP “Paradise Out” in 2014 on Red House Records. She also released a collection of outtakes from the record, called "Drifters," earlier this year.

Performing: 8:30 p.m. at Wooly’s

John Fullbright — “When You’re Here”

Slated as the festival’s headliner, Fullbright received a Grammy Award nomination for his 2012 release “From The Ground Up.” The Oklahoma-based artist released his second studio LP, "Songs" in 2014.

Performing: 9:30 p.m. at Wooly’s

FRO — “New Orleans On The Brain”

Fronted by Harold “FRO” Davis, the group is set to kick off the after party at Lefty’s with its fuse of funk, rock and jazz.

Performing: 10 p.m. at Lefty’s

Dickie — “Forty-Five”

Tenured songwriter Dick Prall and violinist Kristina Priceman come to Des Moines after being added to the bill earlier this month.

Performing: 10:45 p.m. at Lefty’s

Adam Bruce — “Black Montana Night”

The Des Moines-based artist has been performing with various acts for over 10 years.

Performing: 11:45 p.m. at Lefty’s

Dan Tedesco — “The Outlier”

The Illinois native, now Iowa-based songwriter released his new, self-titled LP, featuring "The Outlier," earlier this fall. Tedsco closes the after party at this year’s event.
