Some songs can make the coldest days feel warm and welcoming.

That’s the case when Anna Gebhardt, a Des Moines-based artist and songwriter, performed her track “Vermilion” alongside guitarist Ryan Stier on a foggy afternoon at Brenton Skating Plaza downtown. The ethereal, moving number comes as a comfy, embracing juxtaposition against the cold, wintery backdrop of Des Moines’ skyline.

The track was written about “a lot of things,” Gebhardt said, including friendship. She chose to perform it because the foggy day matched part of the track’s initial influence. The song appears on the eight-song 2015 record from Annalibera titled “Nevermind I Love You.”

“I was writing about a dock that I was looking at when I was staying up in northern Minnesota at Lake Vermilion,” she said. “The dock disappeared into the fog one morning.”

A new record and show announcements are in the works for Gebhardt; she hopes to release the new effort this summer. The record will come with three concept music videos and the music promises to contain collaborations with fellow Iowa artists.

Each Annalibera release differs stylistically from its predecessor, an idea Gebhardt said will continue with the next release.

“Growing up in the Midwest, I think you listen to a lot,” she said “It’s fun for me to make songs in different genres.”
