It’s time to clean the grease out of your ear drums, fair fanatics. A heavy dose of deep fried pop rock and hip-hop is headed to the Grandstand this August, completing the 2017 lineup.
The State Fair announced Friday the last of this summer’s headlining Grandstand performances: esteemed alternative rock group Paramore, set for Aug. 14, and Florida-based hip-hop artist Flo Rida, scheduled for Aug. 15. Tickets to both shows go on sale May 5 via etix.com or by phone at 800-514-3849.
Hailing from Franklin, Tenn., Paramore is set to make its Des Moines return in August riding the wave of the group’s highly anticipated fifth studio album, “After Laughter,” which drops May 12 via Fueled By Ramen. The record’s first single, a contagiously catchy, 1980s influenced track, “Hard Times,” surfaced earlier this month. An in-depth article published in The Guardian called the new release “rich, smart pop that any megastar would kill for,” saying it has the potential to be the band’s biggest release to date.
Paramore, a Grammy Award-winning group fronted by Hayley Williams, previously played Des Moines in 2008 at the Val Air Ballroom alongside emo rock staple Jimmy Eat World. Alternative outfit X Ambassadors, known for tracks such as “Unsteady” and “Renegades,” is slated to open the show. Tickets to see Paramore and X Ambassadors cost $40, $50 or $60.
Topping pop charts for nearly a decade, Flo Rida appears at the Iowa State Fair riding the release of his latest single “Game Time,” which dropped in February. Known for hits such as “My House,” “Low” and “GDFR,” Flo Rida has landed 11 tracks in the top ten of Billboard’s Hot 100 chart. His last studio full-length, “Wild Ones,” was released in 2012. Tickets to see Flo Rida cost $27, $32 or $45.
Both performances would be Iowa State Fair debuts for the newly unveiled acts, according to Register archives.
Announced acts for the 2017 Iowa State Fair Grandstand have been trickling out since last December, with heartland rock legend John Mellencamp, country group Little Big Town and a cappella outfit Pentatonix all confirmed to appear at Des Moines’ east side this August. Plot twist: Canadian rock band Nickelback (appearing Aug. 11) and Flo Rida teamed up for an unlikely collaboration on the track “Got Me Runnin’,” which appeared on Nickelback’s “No Fixed Address” album.
