Hinterland Music Festival announced Tuesday an expansion in 2019 to three nights of beloved Americana, roots and indie rock music.

The festival returns Aug. 2-4, 2019 to the Avenue Saints of the Amphitheater in St. Charles. With the added day, festivalgoers could see the Hinterland lineup grow from 12 acts in previous years to as many as 20 next summer, organizers said.

Can't remember which songwriters have strummed stories in the heart of Madison County? Here's a recap of each group to take the Hinterland stage.

2015

Friday: The Envy Corps, TV on the Radio, Future Islands and Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros

Saturday: Madisen Ward and the Mama Bear, Joe Pug, Justin Townes Earle, St. Paul and The Broken Bones, Lucius, Yonder Mountain String Band, Brandi Carlile and Old Crow Medicine Show

The festival initially planned to take place at Water Works Park in Des Moines, but relocated — due to park flooding — to St. Charles days before campers were set to arrive.

2016

Friday: San Fermin, Houndmouth, Cold War Kids and Ray LaMontagne

Saturday: Field Division, William Elliott Whitmore, Pokey LaFarge, Hayes Carll, Turnpike Troubadours, Shovels & Rope, Lake Street Dive, Grace Potter and Willie Nelson

Behind country legend Willie Nelson, Hinterland welcomed about 18,500 festivalgoers in two days. Hinterland organizers introduced the after-hours "Campfire" stage, featuring local and touring songwriters who perform following the main stage headliner.
