The odds in this lottery are in everyone's favor.

More than 100 picture perfect pooches signed up to be part of the Beautiful Bulldog Contest, but only 40 lucky dogs are chosen to compete in the 39th annual competition at Drake University.

According to the university, more than 135 English bulldogs from 18 different states registered for the lottery drawing, which took place Tuesday. 

The Beautiful Bulldog Contest is scheduled for 12:30 p.m. April 22 at Drake University's Knapp Center in Des Moines. The event is free and open to the public.


  • Jay Byers: CEO of the Greater Des Moines Partnership.
  • Chelsea Dubczak: Miss Iowa 2017. Earned a vocal performance degree from Drake in 2015.
  • Dolph Pulliam: Member of Drake University's 1969 NCAA Final Four men’s basketball team and longtime Drake staff member. Previously served as director of the Beautiful Bulldog Contest for 24 years.
  • Ed Wilson: Chief meteorologist for WHO TV Channel 13 News in Des Moines. Proud parent of two Drake Bulldogs.
