Ankeny’s newest homegrown restaurant, The Fletcher Kitchen + Bar, opened Tuesday in a portion of the former Dahl’s Foods store on the city’s north end.

The revamped space includes seating for about 360 in the main dining room, bar, cafe and patio, said Eric Laclair, operating partner.

The menu, crafted by chef Rob Fair, includes ribs smoked in-house, prime rib grilled cheese sandwich, pork belly nachos, pulled braised brisket Reuben sandwiches, Korean short ribs, lettuce wraps, cedar plank halibut and a variety of burgers, soups and salads, and an appetizer named Not Your Mama's Deviled Eggs. Laclair said there are plans to add vegan, vegetarian and gluten-free dishes to the menu.

The restaurant’s pizza oven has recently been delivered and it will be a few days before it is ready to make pizzas, Laclair said.

The Fletcher will serve quick, pickup breakfast items in the cafe during the week and a Sunday brunch. The main dining room will be open for lunch and dinner with a bar-food-only menu available an hour before closing.

The inside of the dining room is decorated with polished concrete floors, reclaimed wood and butcher block tabletops. The open-concept restaurant allows diners to see into the kitchen as food is prepared. Inside Denny's Room — a nod to The Fletcher owner and Ankeny developer Denny Elwell — neon signs from old Ankeny businesses hang from the ceiling, which also is covered with old wooden doors.

Elwell's company bought the 66,000-square-foot building that housed a Dahl’s grocery store until 2014 when it closed. He wanted to create a local, family restaurant on the city's north side, where residential and commercial development is expanding.

The Fletcher is occupying about 13,000 square feet of the building while Aspen Athletic Clubs and Gino’s Distributing will fill out another 24,000 square feet when both open later this summer. The rest of the space is available for leasing, said Chris Murray, chief executive at Denny Ellwell Co.
