Dave & Buster's, a popular arcade and sports bar chain, is starting its plans to come to the vacant Younkers space at Jordan Creek Town Center.

City workers are currently reviewing the company's requested improvements to the Jordan Creek mall space including facade modifications, according to public documents. The store would be the company's first Iowa location.

The arcade and bar is in the planning stages for a portion of the former Younkers space — not the whole anchor, said Lynne Twedt, West Des Moines' development services director.

Jordan Creek Anchor Acquisition, LLC. submitted a building permit application in May for construction work on the former Younkers space, including demolition, anchor preparations, floor work and a new storefront. The permit included improvements of about 150,000 square feet of space.

In April, West Des Moines city officials met with Dave & Buster's officials to talk about coming to town, Clyde Evans, West Des Moines economic development director previously said.

While city officials have been in discussions with Dave & Buster's for nearly a year, the details about where and when the chain would open in West Des Moines have been under wraps. City officials said Dave & Buster's officials requested details about their plans not be disclosed yet.

The Iowa Legislature passed a bill in 2018 that allowed companies like Dave and Buster’s to operate in the state.

Iowa law previously limited amusement concession prizes to $100 or less. Dave & Buster’s offers prizes like iPads or gaming consoles that surpassed that limit. The new law raised the maximum prize value to $950.

The arcade is known for offering modern and high-tech games that appeal to kids and adults, including shooters, racing games and rhythm games.

Beyond the arcade, the chain offers food, a bar and large screen televisions.

Dave & Buster’s officials have said it plans to open multiple stores in Iowa. The current closest location to the Des Moines metro is in Omaha, Nebraska. The chain currently owns more than 120 venues across the country.
